E-Bike Usage
Purpose: The purpose of this policy is to describe and define the usage of the Aero Methow Rescue Service E-bikes.
Description: The E-bikes have several uses: rescue missions, responder wellness, applicable standbys, and if approved for trail recon before summertime events. They are equipped with basic medical supplies and bicycle tool kits. E-Bikes may only be ridden on approved trails where motorized vehicles are allowed. Permission must be obtained before riding on trails where motorized vehicles are not allowed unless in the event of a rescue. A list of approved trails will be provided. MIPS (multi-directional impact protection) technology helmets must be worn when riding the Aero Methow E-Bikes. Responders must be trained in the operations of the E-bikes and bicycle rack before taking them on a rescue or checking them out for personal use.
Rescue Mission Procedure:
• Attach the bicycle rack to one of the response vehicles. All response vehicles except 877 are equipped with hitch receivers.
• Check tire pressure.
• Load bicycles.
• Collect helmets, panniers, and other needed equipment.
• After the rescue is complete return the helmets and other supplies to the designated area.
• Clean the bicycles and helmets.
• Remove the bicycle rack from the vehicle and return to its designated location.
• Replace any supplies used from the panniers, fill O2 tank if necessary, and clean diagnostic equipment if used.
Responder Wellness Procedure:
• Check the list of approved riding locations before planning to use the E-bike(s).
• You can reserve an E-bike or check one out the day you plan to use it. Both the checkout sheet and reservation list are hanging on the wall in the Rescue Bay near the E-bikes. Be sure to check the reservation list before planning a ride.
• When “wellness riding” you need to be close to our response area and within cell and radio range in case the E-bikes are needed for a rescue mission. This will require you to carry your radio and have it on scan.
• If you reserve the E-bike(s) for a certain amount of time they must be returned promptly.
• Helmets must be worn. If you have your own MIPS technology helmet you may use that instead of the AMRS ones.
• AMRS panniers must be removed before taking the E-bike.
• You may use your personal bicycle rack if it can safely carry the weight of the E-bikes (46 lbs. each).
• You will be responsible for any damage caused to the E-bike(s) from transporting or riding.
• E-bike(s) and helmet(s) must be cleaned after returning them to the rescue bay and all equipment returned to its original location.
Standby Procedure:
• The E-bike(s) will already be reserved for applicable events and permission to ride at the location of the event will already be requested and granted.
• Follow all the steps under the Rescue Mission Procedure.
Trail Recon Procedures:
• Permission must be granted by the either Methow Trails, USFS, or DNR before riding any unapproved trail system.
• If the recon is approved, then follow the steps under Responder Wellness Procedure.
Cleaning and Maintenance:
• E-bikes must be cleaned after each ride.
• Buckets and cleaning rags are in the ambulance bay.
• E-bikes will be charged on Mondays or when the battery is down one bar.
• A maintenance schedule is set in Operative IQ and will only be performed by trained responders.
